The Yankees and some Lighthouses (NYC Part 1)

In September Mike and I went to our annual Yankees game, which unfortunately they lost and worst of all to the Red Sox.  The game was on a Friday night so we decided to plan a little weekend trip to see some of the lighthouses in the New York City area.  We ended up staying on Long Island and we saw five lighthouses in one weekend.  (Side note: DON'T take the Long Island Railroad to the Bronx, drive to the game instead!)

Of course some of the lighthouses that we saw were better than others, but it was fun to see such a variety.  Instead of including all of the lighthouses into one post, that would be way too long, we are going to do the same thing that we did for the Outer Banks' posts and have multiple parts.

The first lighthouse that we saw will be broken up into three posts, this one, climbing and views from the beach near the lighthouse.  If you are staying on Long Island and you want to see some lighthouses, we would recommend that you visit Montauk Point Lighthouse.  Lighthouse Friends even says that if you can only visit one lighthouse, this would be the lighthouse to visit.

Montauk Point got its name from the Montauket Indians and apparently the land was so important and dangerous that President George Washington ordered that the lighthouse be built there on Turtle Hill.  (It's said that the hill reminded European settlers of a turtle's back, thus, the name).  Also as the following photo points out, Montauk Lighthouse was the first lighthouse constructed in New York state.

The lighthouse's tower was originally 78 feet tall, however, after undergoing two changes the tower now stands at 110 feet tall.   The lighthouse is made out of red Connecticut sandstone and the tower was originally painted all white and the reddish-brown band around the middle was added later.

Here are some shots from around the lighthouse:

We actually got a video of the fog signal going off since it was a little bit foggy that day.  Here it is:

Hopefully you are ready for more to come about Montauk Point Lighthouse!
