View from the Beach (NYC Part 2)

Well here it is, the second post in the series of our Long Island and New York City Lighthouse trip.  If you need a reminder of where we left off last time here is Part 1

As I previously alluded to, we went down to the beach to take some pictures of Montauk Point Lighthouse in order to get a different point of view.  It was a really nice day so walking along the beach with the breeze felt wonderful.

Our sneaker imprints on the sand

Before taking pictures of the lighthouse we decided to take pictures in front of a huge sand dune (or what looked like one).

It was fun to take the time to explore!  After walking on the beach a little bit (which was pretty difficult with sneakers), we took some pictures of the lighthouse.

I like the different perspective that the view from the beach provided.  This is one lighthouse that is lucky enough to have a variety of vantage points.  Here are some finally shots of us standing in front of it on the beach.

Hopefully you enjoyed this brief post, be on the lookout for the third and final post about Montauk Point sometime soon!

Lighthouses and Road Races

While I should be blogging the second post about our trip to Long Island and New York City last fall (which will be up later this afternoon), I wanted to write a brief post about different road races that feature lighthouses.

Mike and I have started running again (let's just say that I took a ten year hiatus from it).  It hasn't been easy every day but with the help of the amazing Couch to 5K Program we are still running strong.  We completed the program last week and we are now on to the Bridge to 10K Program.  I'm sure that this program will have similar challenges, but I know that we can get through it.  Then maybe we will move on to Hal Higdon's Half Marathon Program (I would like to run a marathon one day if my body allows it).

During the C25K program we ran a 5K and right after we finished it we signed up for another one!  Our goal is to run in races that support and benefit causes, organizations and groups of people (or animals) that we care about.  The first race we ran in supported the local school for the Deaf and the second race we are running in will benefit the Sodus Bay Lighthouse Museum.  On July 4th we are running in the Sodus Bay Lighthouse 5K and we are hoping to improve our time of about 32 minutes.

While browsing, I came across some other road races of differing lengths that feature lighthouses.  The first, one that I wish we knew about sooner, is the TD Bank Beach to Beacon 10K in Cape Elizabeth, Maine.

The B210K program is 6 weeks long and this race will be two weeks after we finish the program, it would have been a perfect race to run.  Oh well, there's always next year!

Some other races are:

The Cape Cod Highland Lighthouse Annual Road Race (an "Ocean to Bay" 5 mile run) - West Yarmouth, Massachusetts
The Lighthouse Run (5K) - St. Augustine, Florida
The Key Biscayne Lighthouse Run (5K/10K) - Key Biscayne, Florida
Oak Island Lighthouse Run (5K/10K) - Southport, North Carolina
Lighthouse Run (10mile/4mile, you must do the 10 mile to run by the lighthouse!) - Racine, Wisconsin

I hope that one day we will be able to run in some of these races and that there will be more in the future that feature some of the nation's amazing lighthouses!
