Lighthouses?
This past May two of our good friends Christina and Chris got married! Their wedding was beautiful and took place in Ohio. So how does this relate to lighthouses? Of course Mike and I took advantage of the weekend being near some different lighthouses and visited three in the area.
The morning of the wedding we had some time before the ceremony and we decided to go see the
Ashtabula Lighthouse in Ashtabula, Ohio.
We didn't think that it would be a good idea to try to trek across the dangerous breakwater right before our friends' wedding (we were also wearing flip-flops), so this is the closest that we got to the lighthouse. Here is a cropped version of the above picture:
It would be nice to eventually go back and walk across the breakwater to get our preferred close-up photos of the lighthouse. The next time we will be sure to wear sneakers that are more appropriate for scaling dangerous rocks!
After celebrating with our friends at their ceremony and reception we made the drive back home to Western New York. Along the way, we stopped at two more lighthouses in Pennsylvania.
Both of these next lighthouses are located on the Presque Isle Peninsula in
Presque Isle State Park in Erie, Pennsylvania. To get to the first lighthouse, the
Presque Isle Lighthouse, we drove on the park's 25 mph road and then parked alongside the road near the beach where the lighthouse is located. It was difficult walking on the sand in flip-flops but that day the sand was burning hot!
The lighthouse is privately owned but you can still get really close to it. While we were taking pictures of the lighthouse we saw that the people who lived there had cats. We nicknamed them "lighthouse" cats.
Continuing our drive in Presque Isle State Park brought us to the other lighthouse in the park, the
Presque Isle North Pierhead Lighthouse. While not as aesthetically pleasing as the first lighthouse, it was still of good-quality.
As you can see, more people hang out near this lighthouse. There were a lot of people fishing and eating their lunch on the pier. We really enjoyed both of the Presque Isle lighthouses!
Unfortunately, we did not get to see all of the Erie, Pennsylvania lighthouses because our GPS was acting up and we couldn't find the
third lighthouse in the area. A trip to Erie is definitely in our future (especially since it has the closest Chick-fil-A!) Even without seeing the third Erie lighthouse, Pennsylvania is the state that we are closest to seeing all of the lighthouses in the state. This is made easier when it only has four lighthouses!
Are there any lighthouses that you need to revisit because of low quality pictures or no pictures at all?
