A Lighthouse a Day, Feb 28

Today's Lighthouse is Barcelona Lighthouse near Westfield, NY

A lighthouse in the mail..

A few days ago when I checked the mail, I was greeted by this envelope:

I had no idea what it could be (looking back now the word "light" should have been a hint) and I even thought it was junk mail.  Good thing I opened it because inside was this card:

It is a gorgeous card of Bodie Island Lighthouse in North Carolina (a post about our trip there will be coming soon).  I still had no idea who had sent it to me and upon opening it I was greeted with this message:

Now, don't worry, even though the postdate on the card is February 18th it isn't Mike's fault.  He ordered the subscription to Lighthouse Digest before Valentine's Day but it was after the point that I would get the February edition.  I should be receiving my first issue sometime this week!  He ordered the magazine from the Lighthouse Depot website.

It was a great Valentine's Day gift!

Sunset at Hatteras (OBX Part 1)

After our amazing cruise was over, we still had a little bit left of our honeymoon!  While planning our trip, Mike and I decided to drive to Charleston, South Carolina where we embarked our cruise.  Since we were going to have a car we wanted to take advantage of the rest of the week after we got back to the Port.  Since we had started to really enjoy lighthouses, I decided to research the Outer Banks and found that there were four amazing lighthouses that we would be able to see.  There are really five (plus one replica lighthouse) but the remote location of one of them prevented us from being able to add it to our itinerary.  I guess we will just have to go back, darn! :)

Our cruise had arrived in Port around 6am, therefore, we managed to get off the ship at a reasonable hour and made it to our hotel before sunset.  We stayed in Buxton, North Carolina right down the road from Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.  We could actually see the lighthouse from the balcony of our hotel.  I really wanted to take pictures of the most iconic lighthouse on the Outer Banks during the sunset.  So, Mike and I drove to the location and walked along the beach to take some pictures of this amazing structure.

We took a lot more pictures than these, but this is a pretty accurate representation of the sunset.  The colors were even more beautiful in person than in the pictures.  It was definitely an amazing experience and a great way to remember our first time on the Outer Banks.

We also took a lot of videos on our honeymoon, so here is some real-time action of the sunset at Cape Hatteras shot by Mike.

This is the first installment of quite a few posts about our lighthouse adventures on the Outer Banks and the first of three posts about Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.

Key Weird...

On our honeymoon cruise we stopped at Key West, Florida.  Or should I call it "Key Weird" like our walking tour guide did?

One of our excursions was a walking tour and a trip to the Hemingway House and our tour guide was extremely animated.  He gave us the real perspective of Key West and told us the truth about Ernest Hemingway, who was not the angel that some people may think he was.

Interestingly, Hemingway bought his house with a view of the Key West Lighthouse so that he would be able to find his way home after a night out drinking at Sloppy Joe's.  Our tour guide mentioned that the view from Hemingway's balcony was the best view of the lighthouse in all of Key West.

Here's a photo of both of us:

Unfortunately, the lighthouse is a little bit blown out, but it is still there.

Another thing that we liked about the Hemingway House was the "Hemingway cats".  Hemingway was given a six-toed cat and over the years the number of cats living on the property grew to sixty.  Of those sixty cats, approximately thirty of them are polydactyl (extra-toed).  Here's Shine the seven-toed cat:

Isn't he cute?

After our second excursion in Key West we ran (literally) to the Southernmost Point in the United States.  Along the way we passed by the lighthouse and got a different close up perspective of it.

The next time we go to Key West we want to go onto the grounds of the lighthouse and climb the 88-steps to the top.

Looking at these photos definitely makes me want summer to come that much faster!

Today's Lighthouse is St. Augustine Lighthouse near St. Augustine, FL

After forgetting a few calendar pages at work over the weekend I am now catching-up! This lighthouse is a bit of a Cape Hatteras look-alike though it's obviously not as tall. And this picture is another one of those cool reflection shots, seems like a trend in Florida...

Honeymoon-Bahamas, Part 2 (Fake Lighthouses)

So while the "Lighthouse a Day" posts are on hold for a 'lil bit, (I was dumb again and forgot the calendar at work, check back later Monday for a mass-catchup!) I figured I would write the much-overdue post on the other Lighthouses we saw on the cruise part of our honeymoon in the Bahamas.

I will be writing about the faux (fake) lighthouses that we saw/photographed. There are a few reasons why a lighthouse may be considered a faux one, including it being purely decorative and it either does not or never did have any kind of "light" in it, or if it is no longer recognized as an "aid to navigation" by any sort of governing body.

The first lighthouse we saw that falls into this category is the Pearl Island Lighthouse just off of Nassau, we saw it while we were on the boat to our Snorkeling/Private Beach excursion. The two pictures I've added show how lucky we were because of how quickly the weather changed. The first picture is from the trip out and the second one is from the return trip. The sky was still a little gloomy while we were snorkeling but when we landed at the private beach the sun popped right out!

The next faux lighthouse we saw is the Lucaya Lighthouse in Freeport, Grand Bahama. We saw this lighthouse while we were exploring around Freeport after our Swim with the Dolphins excursion. This lighthouse is definitely not an aid to navigation as the tower sprawls right out of the lobby of a hotel on the beach! While we were moseying around we stopped at the beach in front of the hotel (which may or may not have been for hotel guests only) and took a dip in one of those really cool wrap-around pools where the edge of the pool is just a flat-edge that pours over (which was definitely for hotel guests only!)

And here's a shot of each of us in front of the lighthouse (hotel!)

Yes I know not my best photography work ever,  Jamie looks puny...
