Aruba, Jamaica ooo I wanna take ya, Bermuda, Bahama come on pretty mama...

Well, we didn't actually go to Aruba, Jamaica or Bermuda but we did go to the Bahamas on our honeymoon!  We went on a cruise to Nassau, Bahamas, Freeport, Bahamas and Key West, Florida.  It was a great way to relax after our wedding and before school/work started back up.

Before we left on our cruise I decided to research if there were any lighthouses and sure enough there were!

First up, Hog Island Lighthouse in Nassau, Bahamas.

Hog Island Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in the Bahamas!  We actually found two other names that the lighthouse has been called, Paradise Island Lighthouse and Nassau Harbor Lighthouse.  The island that the lighthouse is located on is called Paradise Island and was formerly called Hog Island.  Nassau is located across the harbor on New Providence Island.  We only explored New Providence Island and did not venture onto Paradise Island.  We asked a cab driver if we could get to the lighthouse and he said no.  We also didn't go to the Atlantis resort, seen in the background of the photo, much to the dismay of some of Mike's family members.

Here's another view of the lighthouse taken from the boat that took us snorkeling and to a private beach!

Our second day in the Bahamas brought us to Grand Bahama Island.  We had a lot of fun in Freeport swimming with dolphins!  When our cruise ship was leaving, I thought I saw something that looked like a lighthouse in the distance so I took some pictures of it.  Of course, Mike didn't believe me and said that it probably wasn't a lighthouse.  When we returned home I looked it up and found out that it was Pinder's Point Lighthouse.

You can't even really see it here, but there is a red and white striped lighthouse in this picture!  Here it is blown up:

Pinder's Point is the only real lighthouse on Grand Bahama Island.  It was inactive between 2006 and 2009, but has since been reactivated.

Seeing these lighthouses in the Bahamas was really special, so far they are the only lighthouses we have seen outside of the United States.  We can't wait to see more of the lighthouses around the world!

Where would you travel to see a lighthouse?

  1. Wherever Dad and I travel we always look and see where the lighthouses are. The ones that we saw in Kauai were wonderful! I guess that you take after Dad because just this weekend he said that there was a lighthouse on an island and I didn't believe him...but there it was when I blew it up!!!
