First up on our spontaneous lighthouse trip was the Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse in Rochester, New York.
Isn't it gorgeous? We love this lighthouse and thanks to some Charlotte High School students' protests, it was saved from being torn down even though it had been dismantled and unused for almost one hundred years.
We continued our lighthouse tour in the Sodus Bay area where we saw two lighthouses. First we saw the old Sodus Point Lighthouse, one that was only in service for thirty years.
The original lighthouse had to be moved back, here is Mike standing in the old location!
Before it got dark, we made our way down closer to the bay and walked the pier to the Sodus Outer Lighthouse. The structure of pier lighthouses, in my opinion, is not as interesting as the older lighthouses that they replace. Even still, we wanted to see this lighthouse because of its history lighting the way in Sodus Bay (rhyme not intended).
I like how there is a little bit of the lighthouse's reflection in the water that collected on the pier. Mike and I have definitely improved our photography skills while on our many lighthouse adventures.
We were lucky enough to encounter some of the wildlife that makes these lighthouses their home. At the Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse we saw a lot of woodchucks, while the Sodus Point Lighthouse is home to several rabbits.
What wildlife have you seen while visiting lighthouses?
I love the Charlotte Genesee Lighthouse too...very photogenic!! The only wildlife that I have seen while photographing lighthouses are wild rabbits at the Brandt Point Lighthouse on Nantucket...actually they were on the road very close to the lighthouse. To get to the lighthouse you walk over the beach but the rabbits were close! :)
ReplyDeleteIt is a great lighthouse! We will go see it when you are here in May and also just so you (and anyone else who reads the blog) know it is pronounced "Shar-lot".
